City's 2007/08 season ended on a losing note with relegated Wrexham emerging 4-2 winners following an entertaining affair at Sincil Bank.
Wrexham took the lead in the 11th minute when midfielder Levi Mackin headed home a free-kick and, after Lee Frecklington was forced off with what looked like a shoulder injury, the Welshmen doubled their advantage when Wes Baynes drilled home direct from a free-kick.
Almost 5,000 spectators looked on as City were handed a lifeline when Wrexham defender Steve Evans, under pressure from Jamie Forrester, headed past goalkeeper Gavin Ward from the edge of the area but it was left to the closing stages for all the other goal action.
Baynes fired home another free-kick to make it 3-1 with two minutes on the clock and after Ben Wright pulled another one back and Lee Beevers hit the woodwork, a Wrexham counter-attack ended with Chris Llewellyn lifting the ball over Ayden Duffy to complete the scoring.
Match report by John Vickers at Sincil Bank Stadium:
Assistant manager Iffy Onuora was forced to make two changes to the side that started at Morecambe for this final game of the season against relegated Wrexham at Sincil Bank.
With Adie Moses (groin) and Martin Pembleton (knee) ruled out through injury, in came Danny Hone and Scott Kerr, the latter starting his first game in six following his recent suspension.
City started the game attacking the IMPS Stand but it was Wrexham, with their travelling fans in good voice, who were first to press with Chris Llewellyn dragging a shot well wide from the edge of the box. The Imps' replied with a clever ball from Lee Frecklington seeing Jamie Forrester hold the ball up before forcing a throw-in, which unfortunately came to nothing.
Louis Dodds forced the first corner of the game in the ninth minute with the neatly-worked set-piece seeing Forrester fire into the side netting whilst at the other end two minutes later a foul from behind on Marc Williams by Paul Green led to a free-kick to the visitors. This set-piece led to the opening goal as when the ball was whipped in at pace, up went LEVI MACKIN to flick a neat header past Ayden Duffy.
The Dragons then forced a corner which was halted due to a push on Danny Hone whilst City's response saw Forrester latch on to a Ben Wright flick on only for Steve Evans to get a good block on his shot, which trickled through to 'keeper Gavin Ward.
Midway through the opening period a fine tackle from Hone saw him deny Wes Baynes as the Wrexham midfielder prepared to pull the trigger. City's response saw Frecklington and King both have efforts blocked before the former was forced to receive treatment after going down on the six yard line. He left the field holding his shoulder and Shane Clarke was immediately brought on as his replacement.
A couple of minutes past the half-hour mark a handball by Gary Croft a foot outside the City box gave Wrexham a free-kick. Again they took the chance with WES BAYNES drilling an unstoppable effort past the City wall and into the bottom right corner of a static Duffy's goal.
It took City just six minutes to get themselves back into the game when a long ball over the top saw Forrester put STEVE EVANS under pressure. With 'keeper Ward racing off his line to collect the ball, Evans decided to get his name on the scoresheet and planted an exquisite header over his team mate's head and into the net.
The Imps immediately pressed for a second with Croft cutting inside before curling over whilst at the other end the experienced defender was forced to concede a corner after Neil Taylor whipped a great centre in from the left.
Two minutes of added time passed without incident before referee Beeby blew for the break.
HT: IMPS 1 WREXHAM 2
Both sides emerged unchanged for the start of the second half and it was the Imps who restarted things, heading towards the Stacey West Stand for the last time this season.
Wrexham were quickly out of the traps, forcing a corner less than a minute in but Duffy claimed when the ball was played in for a second time. Straight away, Forrester was bundled over by Tremarco, winning the Imps a free-kick on the right.
Five minutes later skipper Scott Kerr fired over from the edge of the area whilst a similar effort at the other end from Simon Spender ended with a goal kick to the Imps.
A trip on Forrester by Conall Murtagh then gave the Imps a free-kick in a similar position to which Wrexham scored from in the opening period. Forrester set his sights and fired towards the top corner but Ward sprang well and tipped behind for a corner.
The next City attack saw a deep centre from King find Dodds who in turn played in Kerr who fired across the face of goal from a narrowing angle whilst Wright had an effort a minute later blocked on the line by Tremarco.
It was all City as the hour mark passed as they went in search of a leveller and shortly before the match entered its final quarter, Owain Warlow was brought on for Gary Croft at left-back. Wrexham's Andy Fleming came on for Conall Murtagh at the same time.
Wright forced Ward to save at his near post a couple of minutes later before the big striker somehow fired over from close range after King had nodded a deep Hone free-kick into his path six yards out.
Louis Dodds then received a fine reception as he left the field in the 75th minute to be replaced by Dany N'Guessan.
A stoppage shortly afterwards saw two Wrexham players require treatment inside their penalty area. City were unable to make the most of the drop ball though as both Taylor and Evans received further attention off the field of play.
Some great play from King saw him cut in from the left before seeing his ball in find Clarke who was denied by a sprawling Ward low to his right. At the other end Wrexham won their sixth corner of the game which was headed behind by Marc Williams.
A corner at the other end ended with Wright firing wide at the back post before Wrexham's next attack ended with Llewellyn being upended by Clarke. For the second time in the game WES BAYNES set his sights and for the second time in the game, he drilled past Duffy to make it 3-1 to the visitors.
Within 90 seconds it was 3-2 as a ball through the middle set BEN WRIGHT free and, as the Fourth Official indicated that a minimum of four minutes were to be added, he planted a firm drive underneath the body of the advancing Ward for his 15th of the season.
Shortly after the restart N'Guessan forced a corner and when King played the ball in, Beevers was left holding his head in his hands as his effort crashed against the post and away to safety.
Wright then had a shot blocked by Forrester who was unable to get the ball from under his feet as Ward lay prostrate on the deck, and as the Dragons pumped the ball forward, they made the counter-attack count as CHRIS LLEWELLYN neatly chipped the ball over the advancing Duffy to make it 4-2.
Mike Carvill's introduction for Carl Tremarco was the last action of an incident-packed closing few minutes.
