City slipped to their third successive defeat on Saturday afternoon with Bury securing their first home victory of the season at the expense of the Imps thanks to two late goals.

The game was pretty evenly-matched until Ryan Lowe fired the Shakers in front with five minutes to go; the former Chester striker firing home via a deflection off Danny Hone following good work from substitute David Worrall and it was left to Worrall to wrap things up in stoppage time when he fired home from the right hand side of the area.

Prior to this double strike from the home side, Chris Fagan came closest for City but a combination of Shakers' 'keeper Wayne Brown and the foot of the post denied the City forward.

Match report by John Vickers at Gigg Lane:

First Team Coach Simon Clark shuffled his formation for this Coca-Cola League 2 game against Bury at Gigg Lane with Danny Hone returning to the starting line-up to form a central defensive trio with Janos Kovacs and Moses Swaibu. A knee injury, meanwhile, forced Richard Butcher to miss the trip to Lancashire and his place in a midfield three was taken by Shane Clarke.

City kicked off and it was a pretty cagey opening to proceedings as both sides took time to settle into things and it wasn't until the eighth minute until the first half chance came along when a quickly-taken Bury free-kick saw Mike Jones gain control of the ball in the box but a poor touch from the home midfielder saw the ball go straight through to Rob Burch.

A couple of minutes later the Shakers forced the first corner of the game but Burch emerged with the ball again as Andy Bishop got a final touch on the ball whilst at the other end Shane Clarke had an effort charged down by Efe Sodje after he skipped past a couple of challenges before setting his sights.

Sergio Torres tested home 'keeper Wayne Brown in the 14th minute with a rasping 25-yard drive whilst Bury's response seven minutes later saw Burch save well from Tom Newey before Danny Hone blocked Ryan Lowe's follow-up effort.

Burch then did well to block a Lowe shot after the former Chester man cut inside Janos Kovacs before firing towards the target and shortly after the half-hour mark a City corner was cleared by ex-Imp Ben Futcher as Kovacs made a run from deep to try and meet the ball.

A pretty scrappy opening period continued with an overlapping Newey blazing a shot well over the target shortly before one added minute passed without incident.

Neither side made any changes during the break so it was as you were as the Shakers restarted proceedings.

City were the first to press after the restart with a throw-in on the right ending with skipper Scott Kerr linking well with Chris Fagan before seeing his right-footed volley held by Brown in the Bury goal.

A couple of minutes later Aaron Brown won the first corner of the second half but Futcher headed clear under pressure from Kovacs whilst at the other end a great block from Hone saw him fling himself full length to block a Richie Baker effort from the edge of the box.

Stefan Oakes replaced Shane Clarke on the hour mark whilst a double change for the home side at the same time saw David Worrall and Tom Elliott come on for Richie Baker and Andy Bishop.

Tall stirker Elliott was quickly in the action, winning a free-kick from Swaibu and when Jones swung the ball in Sodje rose well to meet the ball before Kovacs headed off his line; an offside flag against the big Nigerian, however, would have ruled out any goal though.

City's reponse saw Fagan took a touch before firing goalwards but Brown got down well to tip behind; the official for some reason awarding a goal-kick though, and Bury's reply saw Lowe curl an effort wide of the target after he escaped the offside flag.

A second City switch saw Andy Hutchinson come on for Fagan in the 68th minute whilst a couple of minutes later Janos Kovacs saw yellow for a challenge on Lowe which referee Jon Moss deemed worthly of a caution.

Cian Hughton joined Kovacs in the book for a mistimed challenge on Jones in the 76th minute and when Jones swung the set-piece into the danger area, Hone got up well to flick the ball out for a corner, which the Imps' back line dealt well with.

As the half continued to liven up, Burch did well to push away a Jones shot after Bury counter-attacked at pace whilst a fourth Bury corner was claimed easily by Burch.

Bury were always looking threatening on the break and with five minutes remaining Ryan Lowe fired them into the lead. The goal came after substitute David Worrall found space down the left and when he looked up and spotted Lowe, the experienced striker did the rest by planting a firm effort past Burch from 12 yards out, although a deflection off Hone ultimately took the ball past the City 'keeper.

Jamie Clarke replaced Cian Hughton as the game entered its final minute and he was quickly in the action, skipping past his man before playing in Torres who saw his effort blocked by Sodje.

An injury to Elliott saw the home side eat up some seconds in the first of three added minutes and it was in the time added on for that stoppage that the home side wrapped up the three points when, after he saw his cross cleared back to him, substitute David Worrall capped a fine performance by planting a firm drive into the top corner of Burch's net. Referee Moss blew for time seconds after the restart.
