Ben's Brace A First For City
Ben Wright's double against Barnet on Saturday saw him become the first player in the Club's history to come off the bench and net twice in a Football League game.
Substitutions are now an accepted part of the game but it wasn't until the 1965/66 season that they first appeared. Even in that initial season a substitute could only be used to replace an injured player and it was only the following season that a change could be made for tactical reasons. Two changes were permitted from 1988/89 whilst the current three substitutes ruling came into effect in 1995/96.
To date, a total of 329 City players have made a Football League appearance from the bench whilst 117 goals have been scored by substitutes.
Prior to Saturday's trip to Barnet, the only players to have come off the bench to score twice in a competitive fixture for City were Tony Lormor at Port Vale in the League Cup on August 17th 1993 and Simon Yeo against Scunthorpe United in the first leg of the 2002/03 Division Three Play-Off Semi-Finals on May 10th 2003.
Wright's double at Underhill means that he's added his name to the record books for the second time this season with the striker's goal against Peterborough United earlier in the season seeing him become our 600th different known Football League goalscorer.
