Huddersfield Reserves 2 City Reserves 3

Posted on: Thu 08 Apr 2010

City came from one goal down to defeat Huddersfield Town Reserve's by three goals to two this evening.

After suffering a 0-4 defeat at home to Huddersfield Reserves earlier on in the season, the game gave the Imps a chance to show the Terriers what they were really capable of.

But it didn't start well for Lincoln, with just 21 minutes on the clock when Huddersfield academy scholar Michael McCaffery scored the game's opener. The youngster showed great alertness to intercept a poor pass infield from left-back James Reid, and then dribbled unopposed into Imps' penalty box, rounding goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite and slotting the ball into the empty net with his left.

But it was two goals in a little over two minutes towards the end of the half that put the Imps in the ascendancy, with striker Lenell John-Lewis and then Richard Butcher doing the scoring.

Firstly it was left winger Michael Gordon who cut inside onto his preferred right foot, swinging over a deliciously tempting ball into the area for Lenell John-Lewis to prod home past Terriers' keeper Simon Eastwood from close range.

And shortly afterwards, following Eastwood's handling of the ball outside of the area following pressure from striker John-Lewis, Richard Butcher stepped up and confidently struck a sublime free kick into the top corner.

That lead was extended even further with just nine minutes of the second half player. Following yet more good work from Gordon on the wing; he got past full-back Stephen Powell and stood a great ball up to the back post for striker Paul Connor to nod home from eight yards.

Huddersfield grabbed a late consolation courtesy of Aiden Chippendale who, after being hauled down by David Stephens following some neat trickery in the area, won a penalty and duly dispatched it past Musselwhite in goal.

Assistant Head of Youth, Grant Brown, said he was pleased with the team's performance and also happy to see some of the senior players getting some much-needed playing time: "There were two evenly-matched teams out there last night, resulting in a good game of football. We put in a good performance, and it was entertaining to watch," he said.

"The two most experienced lads out there last night for us were Paul Connor and Lenell John-Lewis, and I'm sure that both will benefit greatly from getting some playing time. It was especially pleasing to see Lenny getting 90 minutes under his belt."

Brown also reserved praise for Michael Gordon, who played on the left of midfield last night: "I think he looked very good going forward," he said. "Not only did he create two goals, but he also showed that he's got two great feet. He's really shown what he's capable of with a strong performance last night."
