Danny Cowley was delighted with his side’s 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley at Sincil Bank, the three points moved City to within a point of their opponents and kept them in the top six ahead of a busy Christmas schedule of games, starting at Newport County next weekend.
“It was a really good result, delighted to score two goals and keep a clean sheet against a really good Accrington team. The have good movement and clever forwards, we wanted to be really brave and press it.” Cowley said.
“I thought we got it right, in the first half they might have had a lot of possession but we certainly had the best chances. It was a dangerous position coming in at half time with them down to ten (men), we’ve been down to ten men and come back to salvage points or win games so we were very wary of that. So we wanted to be very purposeful in the second half and try to get the second goal, then we had the great ball in from Neal Eardley and it was calmness personified from Matt Rhead.”
The Imps’ starting duo up front of Matt Green and Matt Rhead got on the scoresheet for a second successive game, with Green bagging his fourth goal in his last four games. It’s a partnership, which continues to flourish between teammates who are friends on and off the field.
“Him and Matt Rhead are really close, and I think Rheady is more happy when Greeny scores than he is himself. But to win 2-0 keep a clean sheet and have both forwards score, it’s almost the perfect result.”
Although the win made it four wins from our in all competitions, the Imps’ manager says his team aren’t getting ahead of themselves, and urges the supporters to continue their fantastic backing of the team over the festive period.
“It’s good to go into the Christmas period in form, and playing confidently but we have a really tough game against Newport next. It’s a tough place to go just before Christmas.
“We’ve had unbelievable support, on the penultimate Saturday before Christmas and that says everything about our supporters. And I’m going to ask them to get in their cars and follow us to Newport, I know it’s the toughest Saturday of the season but if we can get the supporters down there it will really help the players and hopefully we can get three points which would set us up nicely for Boxing Day.”
