At the weekend we were delighted to welcome Prostate Cancer UK to Sincil Bank who, with the support of volunteers, will be raising money to beat a disease killing one man every 45 minutes in the UK.
Prostate Cancer UK is the Official Charity Partner of the EFL and their “Man of Men” logo sits proudly in the squad numbers of every one of our player’s shirts. It also adorns the lapels of football managers, pundits and fans across the land.
City bosses Danny and Nicky Cowley have joined forces with over 40 football managers from the English Football League (EFL), Premier League and League Manager’s Association (LMA), including Sean Dyche, Rafa Benitez, Chris Hughton and Gary Rowett, to raise awareness of the disease.
Together they are condemning the deadly disease in a series of passionate, and life-saving, messages as part of a high-profile campaign to tackle the most common cancer in men.
Danny Cowley said: “It’s a huge honour to manage in the EFL. Nicky and I have been well aware of the work Prostate Cancer UK are doing in football and it’s great that we can get involved now as an EFL club and follow in the footsteps of so many of our peers.
“There’s a real sense of pride attached to seeing the team walk out with the Man of Men logo in their shirt numbers – it represents the power of football to connect us to one another and it’s an amazing statement of commitment to the fight against prostate cancer.
“It’s shocking to learn that we lose a man every 45 minutes to this disease so football offers us such a great way to bring that message to people who need it the most. I’m clearly part of a football family, working alongside my brother on the touchline, but we’re no different from any other family, brought together by the sport.
“We have an opportunity here to keep these footballing families together for longer by increasing awareness of prostate cancer and raising money to fund research and support for people affected by the disease.
“Nicky and I are proud to wear Prostate Cancer UK’s ‘Man of Men’ pin badge on the touchline and I hope that our fans will get one like ours and wear it in the stands, showing their support for all the families living with the effects of prostate cancer around the country.”
Volunteers will be collecting money outside the ground before match, in which Lincoln City will face Crewe Alexandra, but it’s important our club and fans know their risk and know how they can help.
