'Top of our wish list'

25 July 2018

After the completion of the deal to bring Northern Ireland international, Shay McCartan, into the squad on a season long loan from Bradford City, the Imps’ boss Danny Cowley was particularly pleased to have got a player who he's had his eye on for quite some time.

“We’re delighted to have brought him in he’s been top of our wish list for quite some time, and we did try to sign him in January but it wasn’t quite possible.  This time last year Bradford brought him in for a significant amount of money, so we have to thank Greg Abbott and Bradford City for trusting us to look after Shay.” Cowley said.

“What we like about Shay is that he can play in the number ten role, he’s a penetrative number ten and that’s what we like. He can come short, get it on the half turn and run at defenders but he can get into in the space behind defenses.  Technically he’s very very good, the quality he has at set pieces is there for all to see and we’re delighted to bring him into the group. We’ve got five players now that can play in forward areas that can all bring something different and that gives us a real tactical flexibility.”

McCartan netted with a wonderful finish on his first outing in a City shirt last night in the 4-1 friendly victory over Boston United and Danny says that the 24-year-old is going to be a player who excites the Sincil Bank faithful.

“He’s busy and hard working, he can score goals and create goals so I’ve no doubt the supporters will take to him. Shay’s a current Northern Ireland international and as everyone knows Northern Ireland have done very well recently so that’s no mean feat.

“We’re really pleased to have him with us, but like we’ve said all along we’ve had to stay patient and be brave in our recruitment, so with the signing of Scott Wharton just a few days ago and now Shay McCartan, I’d like to think that people can see that the patience we have shown has been justified.”

This weekend, The Imps face Scunthorpe United in the final pre season friendly of what has been a busy summer. Tickets for the game are available against The Iron are online HERE
