Lincoln City FC and Lincolnshire’s NHS are coming together to raise awareness of diabetes at the Imps' home fixture v Oldham Athletic tomorrow evening.
Fans are encouraged to speak to the NHS about how best to manage their diabetes, so they avoid some of the health complications associated with it.
Lettie Andreyev, Lead for Diabetic Education and Support at Lincolnshire’s NHS explained that most people with diabetes can live normal lives if they know how to control their condition.
“Managing diabetes requires daily treatment, regular monitoring, a healthy lifestyle and ongoing education,” she said.
“We want to educate and empower those living with the condition to take positive steps in preventing unnecessary complications."
“If you’re diabetic you are more susceptible to foot ulcers and infections, which can lead to having your foot amputated."
“You’re also at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy which affects your sight and can lead to blindness."
“This would be devastating for someone who loves playing and watching sports such as football."
“To reduce your risk of having these complications we would encourage all diabetics to check their feet daily and get their eyes tested regularly, as well as see a diabetes nurse at their GP practice at least once a year.”
Mrs Andreyev added that keeping on top of your medications, eating a healthy, balanced diet, and being active are all positive steps people can take.
“Lincolnshire has some of the highest rates of type 2 diabetes in the country, with one in every two people living with diabetes without even realising it,” she said.
“Early diagnosis and treatment is key to help prevent or delay life-threatening complications.”
Other complications include stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

“We would encourage all our fans who want to know more about how to manage their diabetes or what support is available to head over to the University of Lincoln Fan Zone to speak to the team,” Jake said.
“They will also be testing people who are at risk of getting diabetes, and there will be a chance of winning a framed signed Lincoln City shirt for anyone who takes part.”
