The Imps will be aiming to conclude the season on a high in the final game of the season at home to Colchester United.

City secured the SkyBet League Two title for the first time since 1976 with a goalless draw against Tranmere Rovers last month.

However, Danny Cowley’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Newport County in their final away game of the season last Saturday.

Recent Form

Colchester beat promotion hunting MK Dons at the JobServe Community Stadium last weekend thanks to early strikes in both halves. Sammie Szmodics opened the scoring after just two minutes with Frankie Kent also taking just two minutes to score in the second half.

United drew 1-1 in their last away match when they travelled to Yeovil Town on Easter Monday. John McGreal’s side finished the game with 10 men after Dillon Barnes was dismissed in the 55thminute.

Colchester also failed to win when they travelled to Bury last month. The U’s couldn’t find the back of the net with Dom Telford’s brace giving the home side three points.

Manager Comments

Colchester boss John McGreal has spoken to press ahead of their trip to Sincil Bank this weekend.

The former Tranmere defender discussed the importance of the game saying: “We really need a big strong ref who’s going to stand up to what’s thrown at us, that’s really important on Saturday, then it’s up to us to implement our game when we can.

“Trevor knows the league really well and he’s excellent in that – he doesn’t get swayed any way.

“He does it his way and that’s what you probably need come Saturday, a good strong man in the middle.”

The 46-year-old went on to speak about SkyBet League Two champions Lincoln.

“We know we have to win a game of football and Lincoln will be there to spoil the party but also enjoy their party, because they’ve won the league,” said McGreal.

“It’ll be a good occasion for them and we’re hoping it will be a good occasion for us.

“I’m sure Danny and Nicky (Cowley) will want to put one over on us because they’re local boys."

Previous Meetings

The Imps will be looking for revenge this weekend after losing 1-0 away to Colchester in October.

In a similar fashion last season, the Imps were defeated in the away fixture however they managed to turn the home fixture into a win thanks to goals from Elliot Whitehouse and Luke Waterfall.

In 1999 City won 3-1 when they travelled to Colchester in the League Division 2 with Lee Thorpe scoring a brace and Gavin Gordon also finding the back of the net for Lincoln.

One to Watch – Sammie Szmodics

A product of the Colchester United youth academy having joined the club in 2002, Sammie Szmodics is one of the U’s star players despite being just 23-years-old.

A loan spell to Braintree in 2015 provided the attacking midfielder an insight into men’s football. Since then Szmodics has made over 100 league appearances for Colchester scoring a total of 33 times whilst also winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

This season alone the talented youngster has picked up 13 goals in 47 appearances, his latest coming against MK Dons last weekend.
