The Imps secured their place in the Papa John’s Trophy Third Round with an impressive 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town at Montgomery Waters Meadow this evening.

Anthony Scully opened the scoring in the 19th minute after getting on the end of a Zack Elbouzedi assist.

The 21-year-old has now scored six goals in all competitions this season and was delighted with City’s performance away from home.

“We won tonight which is the main thing but I’m happy to have got my goal,” said Anthony.

“Once I saw Zack (Elbouzedi) had the ball going forward down the left I knew he’d beat his man, so it was up to me to get forward, I’m faster than some people think.

“We worked well as a team and it was great to have scored.”

The Irishman continued by explaining how he is enjoying life under Michael Appleton and that the Imps are looking forward to Saturday’s game at LNER Stadium.

“The Gaffer is brilliant with us,” said Scully.

“We work in training on our patterns so anyone can come in and play a similar way, we have seen that tonight.

“We are doing well in the league and have progressed in the cup tonight, so the goals are a bonus for me, I just want us to keep working hard to win the games.

“The manager says there is no easy game and we know that so we will be ready for the weekend.”

This evening was the first time City have played in front of supporters this season, with Shrewsbury allowing a limited number of fans into the ground.

Anthony finished by speaking about the potential return of Lincoln fans in the near future: “We can’t wait to get our fans back because they are massive for us and give us a big boost.

“I thought we all did well tonight, especially in front of fans because we haven’t experienced that since March. I tend to block out the other teams’ fans and just focus on our own because they create a massive roar when we break forward.”
