Anthony Scully was delighted to get on the scoresheet as Lincoln City started their 2020/21 Sky Bet League One campaign with a 2-0 win over Oxford United at LNER Stadium.
The Irish forward thanked teammate Harry Anderson for the delivery which saw the Imps take the lead just seven minutes into the new season.
"It was a great ball, if you're a wide man you need to get in at the back post if you want to score goals and that's what I did.
"Harry (Anderson) did well to get down the line and put the ball in, I am pleased to have scored but the main thing is we've got three points to start the season.
"The conditions were lovely, some players might say it was too hot but the weather made things even better. We have all dug in today and it was brilliant, we will go again and keep getting better, it is an early part of the season."
The forward continued by speaking about how working hard as a defensive unit was key to the Imps win today: "We all worked hard as an 11 to defend, it is part of our job, it is hard work but it has to be done, you can't just score goals you need to work back as well.
"We didn't mind them having the ball, they weren't dangerous and we felt very comfortable. In the first half we were very happy with our shape and our talking, it was a great 2-0 win today."
Scully also mentioned City shot stopper Alex Palmer who kept a clean sheet on his first Sky Bet League One start for the Imps.
"Alex (Palmer) is a top draw keeper, the save he made was amazing, he just sprung up to get it when it looked like it was going in.
"He didn't have much to do in the opening 60 minutes but he was constantly staying alive to make a save like that. He was really good today, we all were."
Anthony finished by turning his attention to Tuesday's game when City face Bradford City in Carabao Cup action.
"We knew how good Oxford were as a side, we wanted to test ourselves against a team which will be up there.
"We have done well in training and we have belief so it is a great win for us but we will go again on Tuesday and not get too far ahead of ourselves.
"We want to keep going for as long as we can."
