Michael Appleton was pleased with the determination his side showed as they picked up three points AFC Wimbledon.

The City boss praised his team after the final whistle, explaining how they dug in well to see the game out.

He said: “We have had to deal with a lot. I am pleased with how the lads have come out of the game. We’ve struggled to do that in the past, but we dug in and kept a clean sheet, it was great to see the players putting their bodies on the line to see the game out.

“There were three or four players who were immense for us, but the whole team has worked hard to win the game this afternoon.”

Midfielder Lewis Fiorini opened the scoring for Lincoln in the 38th minute before Ted Bishop calmly slotted home City's second six minutes from time to secure three points for the Imps.

Appleton continued to speak highly of his side, saying: “We know what Lewis is capable of because we’ve seen him do that a few times this season.

“I was happy to see him score again because he has been frustrated during his spell out of the team, but he has taken his opportunity this afternoon, I’m pleased for him.

“Then with our second goal, John Marquis has done really well, he gave the goalkeeper the opportunity to take them touches before increasing the speed of his press. It showed the experience he has, and then to pick Ted out in the middle of the box was brilliant.”

The gaffer finished by praising the 941 Imps supporters who made the trip to the capital. He added: “The supporters were brilliant, the players needed them, and they got behind them.

“We're delighted we’ve given them something to shout about on the long trip home, we will need them again in a tough game on Tuesday night at Rotherham.”

The Imps are back in action again on Tuesday night as they face Rotherham United at the ASSEAL New York Stadium. The match will not be streamed live on iFollow Imps but tickets for the fixture are still available, and can be purchased here
