Beginning his career as a youngster with Crewe Alexandra, the midfielder turned professional in 2005. He soon established himself as a first team player making 77 league appearances in four years. In 2009, O’Connor went on loan to Lincoln City where he played 10 league games, scoring once. This was followed by a move to Scunthorpe United in July 2009, fetching a fee of £250,000.

Between 2008 and 2013, Michael became heavily involved with the Northern Ireland national team, making 11 senior appearances for his country. Prior to this he had represented Northern Ireland from Under 15 level to Under 21’s, making 31 international youth appearances in total. 

With two seasons, out of three in the Championship to his name as an Iron player, O’Connor signed for Rotherham United in 2012. The midfielder was part of the United side which won two consecutive promotions from League Two in 2012/13 and then League One in 2014. 

A move to Port Vale followed in 2014 after 64 league appearances and seven league goals as a Miller. During his time with the Valiants, O’Connor was named the club’s player of the year for the 2014/15 season.

The former Lincoln City loanee signed for Notts County in 2016 where he was named club captain by then-manager John Sheridan. O’Connor was offered a new deal at the end of the 2017/18 season but decided in favour of a move back to Sincil Bank.
