Michael Appleton paid tribute to the Imps supporters after they helped his side to victory in the first home game of the season.

Saturday’s match was played in front of more than 8,000 home fans after restrictions were lifted, and Appleton felt those in the stands deserved as much praise as the players.

He said “They will give you a lift, but you have to give them something as well. I thought we upped the performance in the second half and that gave them a little bit of a lift.

“Then they came good when we needed them to really crank the pressure up on Fleetwood and get that winning goal.”

Appleton was pleased with the movement which led to the equalising goal and the decisive penalty kick.

He added: “It was a good goal starting with some good play on the halfway line, with Liam Bridcutt and Hakeeb Adelakun, and when we get in those positions the players know the movement that we want.

“Anthony Scully looks confident and finishes it very well, and I always backed him to score that penalty which also came after an excellent move.

“We’ve got players who are still behind fitness. once we’re all up at the same level we’ll be dangerous.”
