Boss: We deserved the rub of the green

City manager, Michael Appleton, says his squad deserved the slight elements of luck in his sides victory at Charlton following a tough season to date.

The Imps had a goal and man advantage for periods of the fixture which helped City see out the result and complete the double over the Addicks this season.

Appleton said: “It was a strange game. I thought when it was 11-a-side we played well and were comfortable and got in front. Our sending off gave them a lift, the crowd got behind them and put us under a bit of pressure, but our second goal made us a little calmer and we saw it out.

“It’s been a strange old season with so many things going against us so we got the rub of the green on one or two things and why shouldn’t we have? We’ve had good spells this year and played well at times when we’ve not had the result go our well and, fortunately, we did.”

On more individual levels, two performances the boss was full of praise for were those from Anthony Scully and Brooke Norton-Cuffy.

Appleton added: “I was delighted for Scully, besides his goal I thought his general play was much sharper than he has been. He’s had an injection in a knee which has settled him down, he’s had a full week’s training and his performance showed that.

“Brooke demonstrated personality. He is quick and strong, has a good core and he can handle himself. He shown real composure at times when challenges were flying in, he was nutmegging people to get out of trouble, and he showed real maturity in his performance.”
